The first Jamaican pressings were released on the Winro label (initially in a blank sleeve), with represses following on Studio 1 and Coxsone labels until the late 1980s/early 1990s. The printing credits on the rear of the sleeve read 'Lithographed in Jamaica by Stephensons'. ((Click sleeve to enlarge.))

The Wailing Souls were formed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1968 by Winston ‘Pipe’ Matthews (on lead vocals) with Lloyd ‘Bread’ McDonald, Oswald Downer and Norman Davis providing the mesmerising harmonies. Their first recordings for Coxson Dodd were released as singles on a variety of Studio One labels in the early 1970s, (sometimes credited to The Classics). Six of these singles are collected here on their eponymous first album: Back Out With It, Thou Shalt Not Steal, Row Fisherman and Pack Up, all dating from 1970; together with Fire Coal Man (1971) and Got To Be Cool (1972).
