Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down // Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry

The original issue from 1965 came on a red and silver Studio 1 label with a WIRL matrix number. The cover photo has Bob Marley, with arms outstretched, between Bunny Wailer on the left and Peter Tosh on the right. The sleeve carries a ‘Manufactured & Distributed by West Indies Records Ltd 13 Bell Road, Kingston 11, Jamaican W.I.' credit. Now very rare - and very expensive (if you can find a copy).

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

The first reissue, dating from the early 1970s, features the same tracks as the original but with added overdubs throughout. The cover photo now features a more relaxed pose from the trio of Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, and the rear of the sleeve carries 'Manufactured & Distributed by West Indies Records Ltd' and 'Uniprint' credits.

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

One of several silk-screen designs (two more below), dating from the mid 1970s. These are erroneously thought to be 'original' issues and can therefore command high prices at auction. The pressing is the same as the 1970 reissue (complete with overdubs). The rear of the sleeve on this one credits 'Jamaica Recording & Publishing Studio' and 'Stephensons' lithographers.

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

An alternative silkscreen sleeve, this time simply printed in black on white. Same label and pressing as above, but the rear of the sleeve says ' Manufactured by Jamaica Recording Mfg., Co., Ltd.'

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

Yet another version of the silkscreen sleeve (and there may be more...).

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; Ska Jerk // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

On this, and on subsequent reissues, When The Well Runs Dry has been replaced by Ska Jerk (although both the label and the sleeve still list the original title). Otherwise, it features the same tracks as WAILING WAILERS1 (including overdubs). Sleeve Lithographed in Jamaica by Stephensons.

Put It On; I Need You; Lonesome Feeling; What’s New Pussycat; One Love; When The Well Runs Dry // Ten Commandments Of Love; Rude Boy; It Hurts to Be Alone; Love And Affection; I’m Still Waiting; Simmer Down

A 2016 reissue of the 1965 first pressing, remastered from the original tapes (without the later overdubs) and featuring a pristine reproduction of the first edition sleeve. This is the first in a series of Yep Roc Records' reissues of rare and hard-to-find Studio One releases, available in LP, CD and digital formats. Check out the Studio One Newsletter for details of new and forthcoming releases.

A Studio One CD (THE WAILING WAILERS3), loosely based on the later reissues, was released in 1994 with a number of extra tracks (however, most of the additions are Lee Perry productions recorded at the Black Ark studio).

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I cannot recommend highly enough Bob Marley : His Musical Legacy by Jeremy Collingwood, published by Cassell Illustrated, London, 2005. Many thanks to Jeremy for supplying the majority of the sleeve and label photos for this page.

I am also indebted to Werner Kajnath, whose website www.wailers.de provided much of the chronological information used in researching this mini discography.
