This selection is loosely based around the ALTON ELLIS SINGS ROCK AND SOUL album from the 1960s (but omitting So Much Love, I'm Still In Love With You and Why) - which means that we get Alton's less than essential cover versions of Whiter Shade of Pale, Massachusetts and Baby, Now That I've Found You (all recorded in London during the Soul Vendors tour of 1967). However, the additional tracks (mostly compiled on album for the first time) include such gems as African Descendants, Blackman's Pride, Tumbling Tears, and the sublime People Keep Quarrelling. We also get Blackish White, Misty (the 10" cut with Zoot Simms), plus Working On A Groovy Thing and I Don't Want To Be Right (these latter two titles only previously released on an Iron Side 7", credited to Alton & the Ili-Sticks).
