STUDIO ONE DISCO MIX
Soul Jazz SJR CD103
Push Push (Lloyd & Devon); Rastafari Tell You (Judah Eskender Tafari); Ain't Gonna Change My Mind (Doreen Schaefer); Lagos (Dub Specialist); Be Wise My Brethren (George Allen); Night In Ethiopia (Jackie Mittoo); Gates Of Zion (George Dudley); Come Forward (Silvertones); Muddy Water (Ethiopian); Armagideon Time/Version (Willie Williams & Brentford Disco Set); I Want Your Love/Version (Norma White & Brentford Disco Set); You Make Me So Happy (Alton Ellis); Love And Understanding (Sugar Minott); Going To Zion (Winston Francis, Jackie Mittoo & Brentford Rockers)
Excellent compilation of innovative 1970s sounds from Studio One, where we find Coxsone experimenting with synthesizers, drum machines and syn-drums dubbed over new and old rhythm tracks. Not quite what is promised on the label, however, as only five of these titles were actually released as 12" disco mixes. But a superlative collection none-the-less - well worth your hard earned cash just to hear the Judah Eskender Tafari, George Allen, George Dudley, Alton Ellis, Sugar Minott or Winston Francis tracks alone.
Note that track 4 is listed as Kampala by Dub Specialist, but is actually Lagos by Dub Specialist - itself a dub version of Jericho Rock by Sound Dimension.
Be warned, though! Both CDs I have acquired have failed to play the last track without skipping (others have reported similar problems). Probably safer to stick with the vinyl...
