BEST OF STUDIO ONE1
Various Artists (1983)

Heartbeat HB07

Baby Why (Cables); My Last Love (Termites); Melody Life (Marcia Griffiths); Can I Change My Mind (Alton Ellis); Jah Promise (Johnnie Osbourne); Rub A Dub Style (Michigan & Smiley); Impossible (Dennis Brown) //Party Time (Heptones); Throw Me Corn (Larry Marshall); Born To Love (Slim Smith); Roots Natty (Gladiators); Oh Mr D.C. (Sugar Minott); Rastafari Tell You (Judah Eskender Tafari); Row Fisherman Row (Wailing Souls)

Also released on Heartbeat CD (HB-07) in 1987.

This is where the revival really started, with Heartbeat brokering a mould-breaking licensing deal with Coxsone Dodd to reissue Studio One material sourced from the original master tapes. This first release is a superb compilation of classic Brentford Road recordings, a stronger selection than Coxsone himself would choose to put out on a single LP. But, more importantly, all these tracks can be heard (for the first time?) in uncharacteristically pristine sound quality. The Best Of series followed with FULL UP : BEST OF STUDIO ONE VOL.2 in 1985, and DOWNBEAT THE RULER : BEST OF STUDIO ONE VOL.3 in 1988. However, it was the release of Volumes 1 and 2 on CD in 1987 that marked the real turning point - this is when Studio One stepped into the digital age for the first time.

BEST OF STUDIO ONE2
Various Artists (2006)

Heartbeat 11661-7801 (2xLP & CD)

A Love I Can Feel (John Holt); Music Like Dirt (Lyrics); Baby Why (Cables); Can I Change My Mind (Alton Ellis); Just Another Girl (Ken Boothe); The Answer (Lone Ranger); Oh Mr D.C. (Sugar Minott); Jah Promise (Johnnie Osbourne); Declaration Of Rights (Abyssinians); Roots Natty (Gladiators); Rub A Dub Style (Michigan & Smiley); Party Time (Heptones); Throw Me Corn (Larry Marshall); Melody Life (Marcia Griffiths); Born To Love (Slim Smith); My Last Love (Termites); Rastafari Tell You (Judah Eskender Tafari); Row Fisherman Row (Wailing Souls)

Remastered from the original master tapes and featuring five additional tracks from John Holt, The Lyrics, Ken Boothe, Lone Ranger and The Abyssinians (but omitting Dennis Brown's Impossible - which is no big loss, to be honest), this is a very welcome reissue of Volume 1 in the seminal Heartbeat series. It comes in an attractive slip case and features informative track by track sleeve notes by Chris Wilson.

Also released as a double vinyl LP with 2 additional tracks: extended versions of A Love I Can Feel and Baby Why, both featuring toasts by Dennis Alcapone.
