This is where the revival really started, with Heartbeat brokering a mould-breaking licensing deal with Coxsone Dodd to reissue Studio One material sourced from the original master tapes. This first release is a superb compilation of classic Brentford Road recordings, a stronger selection than Coxsone himself would choose to put out on a single LP. But, more importantly, all these tracks can be heard (for the first time?) in uncharacteristically pristine sound quality. The Best Of series followed with FULL UP : BEST OF STUDIO ONE VOL.2 in 1985, and DOWNBEAT THE RULER : BEST OF STUDIO ONE VOL.3 in 1988. However, it was the release of Volumes 1 and 2 on CD in 1987 that marked the real turning point - this is when Studio One stepped into the digital age for the first time.

Remastered from the original master tapes and featuring five additional tracks from John Holt, The Lyrics, Ken Boothe, Lone Ranger and The Abyssinians (but omitting Dennis Brown's Impossible - which is no big loss, to be honest), this is a very welcome reissue of Volume 1 in the seminal Heartbeat series. It comes in an attractive slip case and features informative track by track sleeve notes by Chris Wilson. Also released as a double vinyl LP with 2 additional tracks: extended versions of A Love I Can Feel and Baby Why, both featuring toasts by Dennis Alcapone.
